# Retention

> How long Lumin keeps your data, how old data is removed, and how your plan sets the window.

Canonical: https://docs.getlumin.dev/concepts/retention/

Lumin keeps your data for the retention window of your plan, then removes it automatically. There is nothing to configure.

## The retention horizon

The horizon is the retention window of your plan: 7 days on Hobby and 30 days on every paid plan. See [Plans](https://docs.getlumin.dev/plans/). The create flow does not ask you for a value.

A plan change moves the horizon in both directions. An upgrade extends it. A downgrade shortens it, and Lumin then removes the data that falls outside the new window.

The horizon applies to every signal the same way: logs, metrics, browser events, and uptime check results.

## When data goes away

Lumin sweeps for old data every six hours. When a row ages past the horizon, the next sweep deletes it. So a project on 30-day retention stops returning 31-day-old rows.

There is **no soft delete and no grace period**. Once a sweep deletes a row, the row is gone from query results, and Lumin cannot restore it. Keep this in mind before you move to a smaller plan.

## Live tail is not affected

Live tail shows a row at the moment Lumin writes it. It does not read stored history, so the horizon does not apply to it.

Historical queries are bounded by the horizon. A time range that reaches past it returns the rows that survive, not an error. A long window thins out at its far end.
